Safety & Operability Study (SAFOP)

  • SAFOP, or Safety and Operability studies, are a systematic and comprehensive process used to thoroughly assess and optimise the safety and operational aspects of electrical installations. SAFOP reviews can be undertaken at various stages, including the design development, construction, or commissioning phase of a new facility or the modification of an existing installation. Alternatively, they can also be employed to retrospectively review an operational facility, ensuring that the design integrity aligns with current modern standards and regulatory requirements.

SAFOP and E-HAZOP usually mean the same, focusing on similar results with slightly different methods. At Trydanol, we have wide experience of executing both approaches. Our references for SAFOP/E-HAZOP embrace multiple technologies from onshore and offshore oil and gas sites, industrial plants, offshore wind, solar, green hydrogen and traditional power generation including battery and pumped hydroelectric storage.

  • The primary purpose of a Safety and Operability (SAFOP) study is to thoroughly assess and effectively minimise potential hazards that could affect personnel working in or near electrical installations, ensuring risks are reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).

SAFOP involves comprehensive and critical multi-discipline reviews of both the network design and the equipment or plant to be installed. Additionally, it carefully evaluates any operational limitations and examines their potential impact on the overall operability, reliability, and security of the entire electrical system.

Typically a SAFOP review considers three discrete aspects of the design, namely the impact on facility layout and associated hazards to people, the reliability and fault tolerance of the electrical systems to normal and abnormal operational scenarios and finally the human factors associated with the safe management of the facility again during normal operation, maintenance and response to plant disturbances.

  • The expected outcome of a SAFOP review is to provide confidence that a facility design is both safe and reliably operational. A comprehensive SAFOP review confirms the level of risk reduction measures implemented during the design development phase and ensures that an acceptable minimal level of risk is transferred to the operating asset. In addition, the review often includes detailed recommendations for improvement to further enhance safety and operational reliability.

Control Hazard and Operability Study (C-HAZOP)

  • C-HAZOP, or Control Hazard and Operability Studies, are a systematic approach used to identify potential hazards and operability issues within control systems, particularly in industries that rely heavily on programmable electronic systems.

C-HAZOP is a form of risk assessment that focuses specifically on how deviations from the intended operation of a control system can lead to hazards.

  • C-HAZOP reviews are used to analyse and evaluate the safety, reliability, and operability of control systems.

A C-HAZOP review is used to identify potential hazards, operability issues, and deviations from the intended design that can lead to process interruptions and safety risks.

  • C-HAZOP reviews focus on how unidentified issues within a control system can lead to potential operability problems and failures.

A C-HAZOP review aims to provide a list of actionable outcomes that can be used to prevent unsafe conditions or operational inefficiencies.

Technology Readiness

Assessing Project Design & Deployment

Is your project fully equipped for its ambitions?

Technology Readiness refers to the evaluation of how mature or proven a technology is for its intended environment or application.

We help you navigate the risks and opportunities of adopting new electrical technology.

Our experience comes from the oil and gas sector, where technology stretches and understanding how new or existing technology could perform in differing applications and harsh environments could realise additional upside gains as well as challenges to be mitigated.

With our independent insight and industry expertise, you can make informed decisions, reduce risk, and ensure your projects are launched on proven, reliable foundations.

Ensuring Confidence in Engineering

We provide clients with the confidence that their electrical power system designs are robust, safe, and fit for purpose.

We conduct systematic desktop design reviews for both greenfield and brownfield facilities, evaluating every stage of the power system — from generation and transmission to end-user loads — with a HAZOP-style approach.

Our reviews encompass critical areas, including equipment selection, network redundancy, power management philosophy, emergency arrangements, earthing, and human factors.

This rigorous process ensures that potential integrity, operability, and safety risks are identified and appropriately mitigated. By pinpointing deficiencies and highlighting areas where operational flexibility might be compromised, we help clients make informed decisions based on their asset’s risk profile.

The result is a safer, more resilient electrical system that supports project goals and long-term operational performance.

Our Methodology

We begin with a comprehensive review of your project’s electrical design, its operational parameters, and associated safety standards.

Using structured workshops and a multidisciplinary approach, we systematically identify potential hazards, assess any risks, and develop practical mitigation strategies.

Our reviews include a detailed documentation of our findings, supported by a series of recommended actions to ensure clarity and accountability.

We aim to provide a clear roadmap for implementation.

End-to-End Review Process

From pre-planning determination design, through to final grid connection. Our reviews support every stage of your project.

We partner with you and integrate our reviews seamlessly with your project, providing practical, independent advice at every phase.

Safety and reliability are built in from the beginning, and designed to be sustainable.
